My story
I attended UC Berkeley’s College of Engineering on a full merit scholarship and founded a startup called Pogbet. After a few years of building it up to a $20m valuation, my desire for political change grew too large to ignore, so I sold off some of the IP and joined a political campaign in Arizona.
Most recently, I've worked for a think tank called New Consensus to re-industrialize America through green infrastructure in a plan called the Mission for America (or check it out here).
My family's story
🇿🇦 My mom came to the US from South Africa to escape apartheid. She was part of a women’s group that organized protests against apartheid called the Black Sash. She fled the country after one of her best friends was abducted and killed by the secret police.
🇦🇲 My paternal great-grandparents came to the US from Armenia during the Armenian genocide in the 1910s. Seeking refuge from Ottoman persecution, they navigated through Europe until they found a boat to take them to America. Upon arriving at Ellis Island, they were welcomed with open arms but had to change their last name from Hovagimian-Zatikian to Hovagim.
In retrospect, this has saved me countless hours filling out name fields on forms.
I’m enormously grateful for the opportunities the US has afforded my family. Now I’m searching for whatever will make the most significant difference in the fight for working-class families.
